Values & Beliefs

Our experience of the present is shaped by our memories of the past as much as it is shaped by our anticipation of the future (White, 1990).

I believe that …

People & Problems:

~       People are not “the problem,” problems are “the problem.”

~       People are experts in their own lives.

~       There are more solutions and possibilities available to us than we are often aware.

~       Many times people have solutions to their problems already in their lives but they are unaware of them or don’t know how to use them.

~       Every individual and every relationship is unique. Yet, our common humanity can provide us with strength, healing, and tested solutions to many problems.

Therapy & Change:

~       There are many ways for therapy to be helpful – sometimes immediately.

~       While therapy can be hard, just as often it is strengthening, hopeful, and inspiring.

~       Therapy can be – and many times is – energizing, humorous, and fun.

~       Most healing and growth that endures unfolds over time.

~       We are “whole” people. We live as a unity of our minds, bodies, and relationships, all within the context of our community and culture.

~       Two foundations of healing and change are: 1) Changes that client’s make outside of therapy, together with 2) The strength of the client-therapist relationship.
